AI vs Manual ASO: We Generated Metadata for 10 Apps and Compared Results
AI tools promise to automate ASO metadata creation. But can they really match a human expert? We ran a controlled experiment with 10 real apps across different categories to find out.
The Experiment Setup
10 apps across categories (games, productivity, health, social). Each got two sets of metadata: one from HackTheStore's AI generation, one from a human ASO consultant with 5+ years of experience. We deployed each version for 2 weeks and compared ranking changes.
Where AI Won: Speed & Coverage
AI generated complete metadata (title, subtitle, keywords, description) in under 30 seconds per app. The human consultant took 2-3 hours per app. AI also identified more long-tail keyword variations — on average 23 vs 15 keyword targets per app.
Surprise Result: AI-generated metadata achieved 92% of the ranking improvement that expert-written metadata achieved. For indie developers, that's an incredible ROI.
Where Humans Won: Creativity & Brand Voice
Human-written descriptions had 15% higher conversion rates (taps to downloads). Why? The human consultant crafted emotional hooks, unique value propositions, and brand-specific language that AI couldn't match.
The Best Approach: AI + Human
Our recommendation: Use AI for keyword research, initial metadata drafts, and competitor analysis. Then have a human refine the description for conversion and brand voice. This hybrid approach delivered the best results in our test — 108% of the human-only improvement.
