The Science of Getting More 5-Star App Reviews (Without Being Annoying)

User reviews directly impact your App Store rankings and conversion rates. But asking for reviews at the wrong time or in the wrong way can backfire. Here's the science behind effective review requests.

Timing is Everything

The best time to ask for a review is immediately after a positive experience. For games, ask after completing a level. For productivity apps, ask after successfully finishing a task. Never ask during onboarding or after errors.

Use Apple's Native Prompt

The SKStoreReviewController API provides a native, trusted interface. Users are 3x more likely to leave a review through the native prompt compared to custom modals.

Important: Apple limits native prompts to 3 times per year per user. Make each request count by targeting your most engaged users.

The Pre-Prompt Strategy

Before showing Apple's prompt, ask users "Are you enjoying the app?" Those who say yes are shown the official prompt. Those who say no are directed to a feedback form. This filters out negative reviews.

Respond to Every Review

Users who receive a response are more likely to update their reviews positively. Personalized, empathetic responses show you care about user experience.

Never Incentivize Reviews

Offering rewards for reviews violates Apple's guidelines and can get your app removed. Focus on creating an experience worth reviewing instead.
